An AI chess coach that learns from your games
Most chess training starts from someone else's syllabus. ChessMogg starts from your games. Connect a public Chess.com or Lichess username and Chad, your AI chess coach, finds the positions you keep reaching and the decisions you keep getting wrong. Then he teaches you the fix, one lesson at a time.
What an AI chess coach should actually do
A chess engine tells you the best move. A coach tells you why you didn't play it, and makes sure you play it next time. A good AI chess coach does four things a raw engine can't:
- Finds your patterns, not just your blunders. One bad move is noise. The same mistake in the same kind of position across twenty games is a lesson.
- Explains in plain language. "The engine says Nd5 is +1.2" isn't coaching. "Your knight belongs on d5 because nothing can kick it, and from there it hits c7 and f6" is.
- Answers follow-up questions. You should be able to ask "what if I play h3 first?" and get an answer about that exact position.
- Turns the lesson into practice. You remember what you solve yourself, not what you read.
How ChessMogg coaches you
1. Connect your games
Type your public Chess.com or Lichess username. No password, no PGN exports. ChessMogg pulls your rated games and surveys hundreds of them for recurring positions.
2. Chad finds what's costing you points
Chad looks for situations that repeat across your games: an opening where you score badly, a structure you misplay, a tactic you keep allowing. Findings are tied to real positions you reached, and the moves are verified with Stockfish before they become a lesson.
3. Learn through a personal training path
Each finding becomes a short lesson on your training path: the position from your game, what went wrong, the idea that fixes it, and positions where you have to find the move yourself.
4. Ask anything
Chat with Chad by text or voice. Ask why a move works, what the plan is, or what to play instead. Use the built-in analysis board to check any line.
5. Practice from your own positions
On iPhone, ChessMogg also builds personal puzzles from your games, so your tactics training uses positions you actually face.
A classic Caro-Kann trap: 5...Ngf6?? walks into smothered mate with 6.Nd6#. If you play the Caro-Kann and this keeps happening, it shows up as a pattern, not a one-off.
AI chess coach vs. engine vs. human coach
| Engine analysis | Human coach | ChessMogg AI coach | |

| Spots patterns across hundreds of games | No | Rarely, it takes hours | Yes, automatically |
| Available any time | Yes | Scheduled sessions | Yes |

A strong human coach is still the gold standard for serious players. For most club and online players, the problem is time and cost. See AI chess coach vs. human coach for an honest breakdown.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI chess coach?
It depends on what you need. ChessMogg is built for players who want coaching from their own Chess.com or Lichess games, with lessons and puzzles from positions they actually reached. Chessvia focuses on playing and talking with an AI coach in the browser, Aimchess on statistical reports, Noctie on human-like sparring, and DecodeChess on explaining engine moves.
Is there a free AI chess coach?
ChessMogg is free to download, but coaching and lessons require a subscription. Any trial you are eligible for is shown before you pay. Free engine analysis is available on Lichess and in ChessMogg’s analysis board.
Can an AI chess coach analyze my Chess.com games?
Yes. ChessMogg imports your games from your public Chess.com or Lichess username. No password or PGN export is needed.
Does an AI chess coach actually help you improve?
It helps when it turns your recurring mistakes into practice you actually do. Reading engine lines rarely sticks; solving positions from your own games does. No app can guarantee a rating gain.
Is ChessMogg available on Android?
There is no native Android app yet. The full web app runs in any Android browser at chessmogg.app/app.
Is using an AI chess coach cheating?
Not when you use it to study finished games. Never use any analysis tool during a rated game; follow your platform’s fair-play rules.
