Slav Defense: main line, plans and pitfalls
The Slav Defense supports d5 with the c-pawn, so Black keeps the light-squared bishop free (unlike the Queen’s Gambit Declined). It is one of Black’s most reliable answers to the Queen’s Gambit.
Starts with: 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 · ECO: D10–D19
Main line
Black takes on c4, and after White’s a4 develops the bishop to f5 before playing ...e6. Stockfish: about +0.5.
Pitfall: holding the pawn with ...b5
The queenside collapses and White wins the pawn back with a better position (Stockfish about +1.7 after 5...b5).
Plans

- Free the position with ...c5 or ...e5.
White
- Regain c4 with e3 and Bxc4, or Ne5xc4.
- Use the central majority with e4.
