Dutch Defense: Stonewall, plans and a famous trap
The Dutch Defense is an ambitious answer to 1.d4. Black fights for e4 with the f-pawn and often aims for a kingside attack, at the cost of some weakness around the king.
Starts with: 1.d4 f5 · ECO: A80–A99
Main setup
Black clamps e4 with pawns on d5, e6 and f5. Stockfish: about +0.5.
Trap to know: the 2.Bg5 mating net
Chasing the bishop with pawns opens the e8–h5 diagonal. After 6...Rh6?? White mates in two.
Staunton Gambit
White gives a pawn for fast development (Stockfish: about equal).
Common Dutch mistakes
- Weakening the king with ...g5 and ...h5 pawn chases.
- Letting White play e4 unchallenged.
