Chess game review: what each tool shows you

Every chess site can show you where you blundered. The useful question is whether a review tells you what to do about it. Here's how the main chess game review options compare, and where each one stops.

Three kinds of chess game review

TypeExamplesGood forMisses
Engine reviewLichess analysis, Chessigma, any Stockfish boardFinding the exact moves that lost the game. Free and unlimited on Lichess.Doesn't explain why, or what to practise.
Labeled single-game reviewChess.com Game ReviewMove labels (best, mistake, blunder), accuracy, a coach-style summary. One game at a time. Free accounts are limited.
Pattern review across gamesChessMogg, AimchessFinding what you get wrong repeatedly and building training from it.Less useful if you've only played a few games.

Why single-game review plateaus

Reviewing one game shows you one mistake. But your rating isn't held back by one mistake. It's held back by the same few mistakes repeated over hundreds of games: the opening line you always misplay, the structure you don't understand, the tactic you never see coming. Single-game review shows those one at a time, and you forget each one before it comes back.

How ChessMogg reviews your games

  1. Connect your public Chess.com or Lichess username. No export, no password.
  2. ChessMogg surveys hundreds of your games for recurring positions and mistakes.
  3. Chad, your AI coach, turns each pattern into a lesson: the position from your game, the idea that fixes it, and positions to solve yourself.
  4. Ask Chad follow-up questions by text or voice, and check any line on the analysis board.
A pattern worth catching across games: Noah’s Ark trap

In this Ruy López line, 8.Qxd4?? lets Black trap the b3 bishop with ...c5 and ...c4. Stockfish gives Black about a 3-pawn advantage. If you play the Ruy López as White and this happens to you twice, a single-game review won’t tell you.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free chess game review?

Lichess offers free, unlimited Stockfish analysis for every game. Chess.com’s Game Review is more guided but limited on free accounts.

How many free game reviews do you get on Chess.com?

Chess.com limits full Game Review on free accounts; check Chess.com’s current membership page for the exact allowance.

Can I review Chess.com games outside Chess.com?

Yes. Tools such as ChessMogg import your games from your public Chess.com username and review them without a Chess.com membership.

What is the difference between game review and coaching?
